Laura Robson 3 /round-up

"Laura: I'm like, you go girl!" (teenage fan, anon)

Well teenage fan she did go and she did beat Li Na. A very mature performance particularly when she was at the wrong end of some suspect line calls/umpire decisions at crucial moments. I had a feeling that Li Na would not cope with this match up. I had invested 12 points on Li Na on the outright market (3ew @ 33/1 and 4w 2p @ 25/1). So thankfully the 2pts @ 8.52 Laura for the match wins 15 points to more than pay for the Li outright investment.

We just have Angie Kerber in the outright now. However Vinci could surprise us all by winning Angie's quarter @ the 100/1 taken! She saved match points in the last round getting past the "Shed".

Finally a good day on the horses - two wins from five selections: Tom Sawyer and Ronaldinho, 7/2 and 9/2. Stakes nine points, returns 25.68 points. Happy day(s).

Laura Robson 2

Win or lose against Li Na this girl is going places! She will be a veteran come Wimbledon 2013 at the ripe old age of 19. Remember she won junior Wimbledon aged 14.

1.5pts ew Laura Robson to win Wimbledon 2013 @ 200/1 Paddy Power (1/2 odds 1,2)

Three points staked.

Also available at 200/1 with WH. Some firm called "You Win" will give you 500/1 - will they be operating in July 2013 I wonder.

Laura Robson

A terrific match last night between Kim Clijsters and Laura Robson. If you did not see it (and have the opportunity) the highlights will be on Eurosport this afternoon. It wasn't that Kim played poorly. We know she is not as good as she was but the last time she lost at the US Open Laura was nine years old.

Laura plays Li Na next who has not played brilliantly in the first two rounds. The Chinese has a good record against lefties so I am hopeful that she will be able to cope with the teenager's much improved game and make further progress in the tournament. There are of course potentially much bigger tests for the outright selection ahead.

I have had a small match bet on Robson as I fear she could win:

Monday review

Loads of bets but no winners. Four placed horses limited the damage to a loss of just over five points on the day: P16/1 (r4 10p), P16/1 (took 10/1 BOG), P14/1 (r4 20p), P11/1. The latter was the closest we came to a winner - Defence Council went down by a rapidly diminishing head in the 17:45N

Not intending to get very involved tomorrow, off to Presteigne festival for some classical inspiration. Maybe one race at Ripon.

Here is a dark horse for the ladies' event. A player that reached the quarters last year. Ladies' US Open

For once I cannot complain about the draw. My two main hopes Li Na and Kerber have been drawn in opposite halves. What's more the number one hope Li Na is in the opposite half to the hot favourite Serena which gives chances for my ew punts. The bookmakers think so too and the Chinese is now around the 11/1 mark from the 33s and 25s taken. One could say that it's worked out even better for Serena though as besides Li Na, Aza, Kvitova and Pova are all in the top half.

In Kerber's quarter (fourth) the betting is between her and Radwanska to win that section. The latter is carrying a shoulder injury though so I have hopes that AK can reach the semi to play Serena for a place in the final. However I have just been in Ludlow's Betfred shop - a blight on the market square - but needs must. As I was only allowed 20p on the net, I have had a very speculative cash bet on the winner of this week's (weak) Dallas tournament as follows:

1pt win Roberta Vinci @ 100/1 to win fourth quarter US open singles Betfred

Friday review

Quite a strange hectic day, but successful. The first two selections I put up were substantially backed. The Mccredie pig ended up tailed off but as 3/1 favourite - I took 11/1 with WH but despite this they briefly went 12/1 before the plunge. Dark Opal was a better outcome. On at 14/1 with a 15p rule 4 taking the price down to 11.9-1 but still way ahead of the 7/1 SP. And it won!

Of the other selections we had a non-runner, one pulled up, a place at 8/1 and last but not least 11/4 winner Lady Del Sol to end proceedings (SP 2/1) in the last at Hamilton.

All of this means a 20.08 point profit today to add to yesterday's spoils of 18.8 points profit. That pulls us back from a poor period.

I think my horse racing strategy is far more successful when there is a bit of rain about. Unfortunately I am not anticipating a horse bet tomorrow despite the weather.

US Open tennis 3

Li Na wins a topsy turvy final in Cincinnati. New coach Carlos Rodriguez plays a big part in my opinion pulling things around after the loss of the first set 6-1. Greatest thing though about Carlos being Li's coach is hubby NOT being coach!

Neither Li Na (or Kerber) plays New Haven next week which is sensible. Plenty of time for Carlos to have further influence. Kvitova, Radwanska do play New Haven and will be overplayed come the US Open start on Monday week. Doubts about Sharapova, who has not played since the Olympics. I am topping up on Li Na with Paddy Power:

US Open tennis

We have an interest in the men's event with 14/1 Fed to win two grand slam events this year @ 14/1.

For the women's event Serena Williams is around even money whereas the holder - Sam Stosur - is 50/1. Perhaps shows us we were a bit unlucky last year when on the younger Williams sister at a big price. Anyway enough of that.

Li Na has just employed Henin's old coach and that might just bring the improvement needed to win another grand slam. Judging by her demolition of Aggie last night it looks like it's already providing dividends. Li's husband obviously takes no further part!

Talking of Stosur she was turned over by Venus in three sets last night. Venus increasingly looking like she is getting back to somewhere near her best. My antepost bets as follows:

3pts ew Li Na US Open @ 33/1 Ladbrokes (1/2 1,2)

Great St Wilfred Handicap 15:30 Ripon

Ground is good at Ripon as I write but this could change by the morning as heavy overnight rain is forecast. Whatever the ground the main debate will be about which side of the track is favoured. Eight of last ten years it has been the far side (low), but not last year.

My initial thought is to back Bertiewhittle (drawn one) at 12/1 with WH. One of the David Barron quartet (which includes one of the Pricewise selections Colonel Mak). The inform Harry Bentley takes the ride and with his 3lb off the selection will carry only 8-6. First bet for Saturday more, I am sure, will follow:

Strange ride by Hughes on Dare To Dream. Never ever put the horse in the race. Interestingly there was late money for the stable companion  - ridden by RLM - which finished as runner up just a head away from winning. Hmm.

When the Salisbury failure was followed by our first Kempton runner Kinglami leading by five lengths at the furlong pole (and losing on the line), I thought it was going to be a horrible day. However Glass Office and Intransigent both won well albeit with rule four deductions for significant non-runners.

In the end I lost half a point on the day - what a waste of time!

Football season 2012-13

For the first time in more than 20 years I have not bought the Racing Post "pull-out" guide to the forthcoming football season. Part of my "legacy" of the Olympics is my realisation of how much I hate our national game.

The thought of MOD on the horizon fills me with absolute horror.

The Olympics has confirmed how much I hate everything about football, from its tribal fans with their ludicrous deluded possession of the players and the clubs to the money grabbing low-life players themselves: Rooney, Tevez, Terry.

I have made a good start, post Olympics. I didn't watch a single minute of the Community Shield yesterday even though I was ill in bed and it would have been easy to do so. I did not back Tevez or Torres for TGS when I discovered they had scored. I have not had a football ante-post bet and I do not intend to.

I will have to spend all the time saved from not watching football either in the gym or on the tennis court. A far better prospect than wasting two hours waiting for some (usually) thoroughly unpleasant characters to score a couple of goals.

Olympics

How we laughed when the parody of the Olympic organising committee talked Jube-Olympics, sustainability and legacy. Now the Olympics have been and gone. I feel privileged to have been a spectator, having witnessed (almost certainly) the best two Olympic tennis matches to take place - The Fed v Delpo and Mugray v Djoko.

As for the betting? A disaster: too much staked and no returns.

What now for the magnificent Olympic Park buildings: the Stadium, the Aquatics Centre, the Velodrome?

Legacy?

Shergar Cup

Not everyone's cup of tea but the renewal is staged at Ascot tomorrow. The races, as you'd expect, are incredibly competitive. In the one race where there was a warm favourite - the stayers - we have an early non-runner: Western Prize which will be a blow to Take and the International team as this one could have gone off around 5/2.

Ireland has won the team prize for the last three years but this year Ireland and GB are amalgamated as one team represented by Murtagh, Fallon and Doyle. Looking at their rides and indeed their experience I don't understand why some bookmakers do not make them favourites for the team prize. I have therefore stepped in:

Shergar Cup team : 6pts win GB and Ireland @ 11/4 Coral (also available 888 and Blue Square)

It would not surprise me if the RP went for GB/Ireland so it may prove best to take the price now rather than wait until tomorrow.

No good today. Very disappointed with Buick in the Sandown race. Rode a terrible race IMO. Annoying because I could have made a case for the winner. Still can't get it right. Mind you, it won't be long before the 50th anniversary of my first ever bet. Not a lot of time, therefore, to get it right!

Olympics' medal markets have been a disaster. Apologies to all who got involved.

Friday bets

Off to Wimbledon centre court tomorrow. All the singles' semis are on here except the one I already have money on - Maria v Maria which has been moved to court one. Not too bothered about that as have seen Pova playing a couple of times in Birmingham. MaKiri has a chance on her best form having taken care of Kvitova in straights today.

On centre Federer v Delpo is followed by Serena v Vika and then Mugray v Djoko. Williams sisters end the programme with a doubles against MaKiri and sourpuss Petrova.

First two look like going to the favourites but I think Mugray has a real chance of winning his semi with the crowd support behind him. H2H is 8-5 Djoko, but two of the Djoko wins were on clay. The Scot looks so fired up I think he's worth a play.

I have had 4pts @ 7/4 Mugray to beat Djoko with Paddy Power.

A couple of bets at Goodwood tomorrow following two heavily backed seconds at Nottingham today:

15:10G 2pts win 1pt place Swiftly Done @ 14/1 Betfred BOG

15:45G 1pt win Angels Will Fall @ 12/1 Paddy Power BOG

Might be further horse bets around 9am but that will be it for the day...

Olympic tennis - ladies' singles

My each-way selections in the men's event are already on their way home so you may not wish to read any further.

Serena is now a very warm favourite to lift the ladies' title. However she makes the market conducive to each-way betting in the bottom half of the draw. This features Clijsters against Sharapova and Kvitova versus Kirilenko. The market will tell you the bottom semi will be Masha v Petra, however I thought Sharapova was very poor today. Lisicki should have beaten her. Pova served three double faults in ONE game to go a set and a break behind. Lisicki responded immediately with three double faults of her own to level the match (Tracey Austin - "A stunning come back by Sharapova", what tosh, I could have won that game if Lisicki had served me three double faults!).

Kim Clijsters has moved quietly through the draw and has not lost a set in reaching the quarter-final. She can be backed at 22/1 to win her penultimate tournament, Pova is no bigger than 11/2.

In the other match MaKiri has a winning H2H record against Kivitova and so is not completely out of it. My bets are:

3pts ew Kim Clijsters @ 22/1 with Totesport (1/3rd odds 1,2)

1pt ew Maria Kirilenko @ 66/1 with Paddy Power (1/3rd odds 1,2)

Eight points staked.

Don't be surprised to see a Pova v Kvitova semi-final!!
