Saturday review

A profitable day on the horses thanks to Dubawi Sound up at Newcastle. No horse racing bets expected on Sunday or Monday. Then it's glorious Goodwood where I will probably have a bet on Tuesday. Richard Hughes is now a best priced 6/4 for Goodwood top jockey honours.

In the Olympics China have started well with four gold medals to date (USA, one) and six medals in total (USA, five).

I am not recommending any further bets but will just mention that you can get 11/4 China and, for those of you with a Sportingbet.com account, that you can get 100/1 Russia. I am not allowed to bet with SB but if you are why not have a couple of quid at 100/1 to give them a VERY UNCOMFORTABLE LIABILITY?

Friday review

Nightmare with Supaheart who just fails to get back up having cut out most of the running. Goes down by a nose! Better fortune in the 17:55 Thirsk as Mecca's Team wins comfortably @ 9/2 (5p R4). Annoyed at not taking the 7/1 before I went out this morning, but, amazingly drifted to 9.0 on betfair ten minutes to the off - so had to top up with that - before it was backed in again on the exchange to around 6.0.

Richard Hughes

A little annoyed to see RL Moore ride six winners in a single day shortly after backing Hughes @ 7/4 for the jockeys' championship. Despite this achievement it's now evens each of two for the top jockey honours. In the last seven days they have both ridden nine winners. Over the last 14 days it's 17-12 in the Irishman's favour.

Hughes has been looking forward to Goodwood all season. I can see him being top jock at the Sussex track. Most bookmakers go 6/4 or less. Coral offers a standout 5/2 so I am playing that.

6pts win Richard Hughes @ 5/2 Top Goodwood jockey with Coral

Olympic tennis

At Wimbledon of course. However unlike the grand slam event played here not that long ago, the men play best of three sets until they reach the final. In theory this should mean surprise results are more likely. I've had a couple of each-way bets in the hope that this proves to be the case. In the men's second quarter David Ferrer is a warm favourite to reach the semis. His main rival for that berth is del Potro whom the Spaniard beat at the All England Club. His opponent in the semi-final is very likely to be Federer so that may be as far as he gets. The 33/1 though still makes each-way appeal.

In the bottom half of the draw I like the odds available on Berdych, in Murray's quarter. The Czech is 4-2 HTH with the Scot so 40/1 from Boyles has been taken.

I don't know what to make of the ladies. This may well be Serena's second trophy within a month. However I cannot resist a tiny each-way bet on a 100/1 shot.

Here are the wagers:

David Ferrer 1.5pts ew @ 33/1 Paddy Power (1/2 odds 1,2)

Tomas Berdych 1pt ew @ 40/1 Boylesports (1/2 odds 1,2)

Yaroslava Shvedova 0.5pt ew @ 100/1 Paddy Power (1/2 odds 1,2)

I have a ticket for semi-finals day so it would be rather splendid if at least one of the above were in action then.

Big Difficult makes it look easy

Els is a bottler too so just as well he won it sitting in the clubhouse!

Jockeys' championship

Unfortunately I am in a bit of a hole in this market and now have to minimize potential losses. I have underestimated Richard Hughes' determination to win the event. Our possible big winners - Hanagan and Buick now look out of it. It looks like a straight fight between Moore and Hughes. Our "saving" hedge on Moore is only worth +8 on the overall market. I have to turn this into a potential -8 by staking:

16pts win Hughes to be champion jockey @ 7/4 Paddy Power (also available at totesport)

Golf

No horse bets today. Will probably watch the conclusion of the golf. As you will know, I had a long term bet on Tiger at 14/1 with Unibet for this months ago. He looks to be playing far too conservatively to win this.

Can Scott hold his nerve? Maybe. But if the forecast wind arrives this afternoon it may help McDowell's chances. He plays well in a breeze and has a solid temperament.

All major bookmakers except Ladbrokes are offering only 1,2 for each-way bets. Ladbrokes offer 1/5 1,2,3. Big Difficult could make the first three if the wind picks up. My bets for today are:

4pts win McDowell @ 9/2 Bet365 (similar price on "exchanges")

SPOTY

I am in a good mood tonight having seen Heartsong hack up earlier this evening in the Sandown sprint. Even though I picked two in the race it was terrific to see the 20/1 choice (SP 12/1) oblige with ease.

I've just watched the first ten minutes of the Victoria Pendleton documentary and I have to have a small play on her for SPOTY. Yes Jessica is the obvious SPOTY female choice around the 4/1 mark as she is a 4/5 chance to win her event.

Victoria is 2/1 second favourite for her sprint event. But Victoria is ten times Jessica's price for SPOTY - a 40/1 chance. This doco will have given her exposure to a wider audience. Should VP win her event and JE get only a silver 40/1 could prove a massive price. So I have had:

Olympic medals

You may have read the RP Olympic article on Saturday. I was spooked by the headline: "On Track For A Record Haul". This was a discussion of GB medal prospects. The leading Italian statto Luciano Barra predicts that GB will achieve 62 medals compared to 47 in Beijing. Fortunately, for the purposes of the substantial "low" bet I have already placed on GB gold medals, he sees a problem with GB exceeding their last gold haul of 19. Most bookmakers have shifted their markets down to 22-23 so having gone <25 we still hold the value play.

Barra's complete GB forecast is 19/27/16 (62) which is very encouraging for my supplementary wager on silver being the top GB scoring medal (placed @ 15/8 with Stan James). Betfair now has a market on this - I have just hoovered up all the 3.1 silver. If you want to play wait for someone to put it up again would be my advice. Incidentally the bookmakers' market on total GB medals is around the 62-63 mark so no betting angle apparent.

What interests me also is Barra's predictions for US and China medals. He predicts an extraordinary low total for the US - only 78 including 35 golds. For China these projections are 100 and 43. China to win most golds can be backed at 6/4 whereas China to achieve most medals won is close to 5/2. The only other predictor I have seen has China golds at only 34 and US higher at 39, so I am not going to play the "gold" table. The overall medals in this second survey, however, are 92 China, 88 US. Given this is a two-horse race and both forecasts put China on top (albeit one only marginally) I think China is a play at the prices. If you are allowed to bet with Sportingbet you can get 5/2. I have played with Betfair at a fraction under 5/2 but will book this bet, as follows, at a lower price for the records:

12pts China to win most medals at 2012 Olympics @ 9/4 Coral (or Bet365)

Victoria Pendleton - a possible gold medalist for GB cycling

Quite a muddling day. Salisbury abandoned which gives us some respite in the Hughes' jockey championship surge - he had six rides there, the only leading contender scheduled. My two in the big Newbury sprint have both attracted money - and Pricewise went nowhere near the race!

Dutching at Newbury tomorrow

I have taken a position on the big sprint at Newbury tomorrow. I think the low drawn runners could prevail in the testing ground. If I am right (which of course is debatable) the race could be decided on the far side between Satsuma and Lyric Ace. The latter is trained by Richard Hannon who has a tremendous record in this race and is a trainer in form. Jockeys' championship

Disappointed that Pontefract has been abandoned today. Really fancied Miss Ella in the last.

Just had another look at the jockeys' championship. We are almost half-way through the flat season and the leader, RL Moore is on 70 wins. Buick (63) and Hughes (53) are next. These are not huge totals. The key to the final winner's total depends on two factors in my view. Will Hughes maintain his challenge if he is still off the pace come August? Will a head to head duel develop as it has done in recent years? Hanagan v De Sousa last year and Hanagan v Hughes in 2010 were great contests which went down to the wire.

I have a feeling it won't be like that this year and the winner could post the smallest total since Fallon won in 2002 with 144 winners. Obviously more abandoned meetings will play a part in shrinking the ultimate total!

I have had two bets with Ladbrokes two minutes ago:

Monday review

Small profit on the day (four points) with Horatio obliging in the last. Thatcherite was backed from 25/1 to 16/1 late on and ran a fair race in finishing sixth.

In the jockeys' championship it's now 50/1 bar three. We have two of them, however Hughes is still hanging in there around the 3/1 mark which is a concern. He is 17 behind RLM and ten behind Buick. I was pleased to see he was swanning around Ireland last week playing golf. Moreover he drew a blank at Windsor tonight. That's a losing sequence of 25 now with no winners in July. He doesn't ride tomorrow but then doubles up on both Wednesday and Thursday. I'm hoping if he doesn't close the gap by the end of the month he might throw the towel in as far as the championship is concerned. People obviously think he is still right in there with a chance though - hence the short price.

Murray v Federer

Back in December we backed Federer to win more than two grand slams in 2012. Only one of the those bets is still alive - three points on Federer winning two GSs in 2012 @ 14/1. Obviously Federer is a warm favourite today and should he win we will have a nice bet on him to win the US Open. If they close the roof this, I believe, would be a further boost to Federer's chances.

If Murray is to have any chance I think he has to get off to a quick start - he is often a slow starter IMO. I've decided to take William Hill's special offer on Murray as follows:

3 pts on Murray to win the first set and the match @ 7/2 (special price) William Hill

I realise we could get beat both ways but that's the way it is!

A great shame that Aggie could't pull it off yesterday. Thought we had a chance when they went to a third set. Obviously having being ill with a respiratory infection would not have helped.

All bets have now been updated online for 2012 including the horse racing flat season bets that have been going so well in turning around the year (thanks to a yield of 32.0%). These bets are shown separately on this link:

Friday review - Saturday bet

Not a bad day in the end despite the anti - Murray strategy yielding nothing. He goes into Sunday's final with a realistic chance - after all he has a winning record against Federer 8-7. No value in the match prices though and other opportunities like SPOTY have dried up -9/4 can't be value with the Olympics to come.

On the horses we did OK. Everything I put up was a non-runner/abandoned except the 14:20 Sandown race. Consequently the 20/1 winner means 27 points returned for total stakes of seven points.

One early bet for Saturday:

14:05S 2 pts win 1 pt place Elusivity @ 8/1 William Hill BOG

Jarrow on the march!

Our second string bet wins the first at Sandown @ 20/1 advised (SP an incredible 6/1). Don't hold out much hope for my other two races however as the fields have been severely reduced by the weather!

In terms of our anti-Murray strategy that's not working out too well and it's the last throw of the dice today with Tsonga who holds a 1-5 HTH with Murray. I don't think Tsonga is worth an additional match bet, I'm happy just let our ew bet @ 11/1 Tsonga run.

Tomorrow we have Aggie in the ladies' final however Serena is 1/5 to win the match. No hedge is required as we will pick up at 50/1 for the place part of the bet. In the unlikely event that Aggie wins the first set or alternatively is a break up in the final set I may hedge a few quid on Serena if the betfair price appeals.

Enjoy the Murray match whoever you are supporting!

Very pleased to see that both players in our ladies' hedge bet double eventually lost tonight! This means our 1pt ew bets on Aga (100/1) and Kerber (66/1) guarantees a minimum return of 34pts, as one of these players is going to contest the final on Saturday.

In the 21:20 at Kempton - the only race of the day - the principal selection Homeboy was beaten a head @ 11/1 ew advised (SP 9/1). The other selection was a non-runner so a small profit on the race.

Andy Murray v David Ferrer Qtr final

They are 5-5 HTH although four of Ferrer's wins have come on clay he has won the last two encounters and was in top form in dispatching Del Potro this afternoon. Ferrer beat Murray in straight sets at the O2 in December and followed up with a comfortable win in this year's French Open.

I think David should be around 6/4 so I have taken some 9/4 that Stan James have just put up. I have also had a small interest in Ferrer 3-0 in sets:

I have had a hedge bet today on neither of them winning. I suggest you should only have the following bet if you have had:

AND you have also had:

3pt win double MaKiri to beat Aga and Lisicki to beat Kerber @ 10/3 and 13/8 with Ladbrokes

Ladbrokes are slightly below the best odds but the result stands in these matches if one point is played unlike most other bookmakers. The double pays just over 10/1. Of course there is every possibility that only one of our favs will go through. However unless something unforeseen happens Aga would be fav to beat Lisicki and Kerber would be fav to beat MaKiri so if either of those two possibilities arise we will probably look to save some stakes on the underdog.

In the bottom half of the draw we have no interest in SW v PK but in the other match we have:

So this boils down to 33/1 to get past Aza. No hedge opportunity here though as Vika is 1/5 to get past the Austrian. A watch and hope job.

Monday review

A good day at Pontefract with the winner of both races with our principal selections.

In the 15:30 Miss Ella Jade gets up close home to win by a neck @ 8/1 advised. In the 18:00 race there were several withdrawals so our 11/2 winner became a 4.4/1 chance and the placed horse odds were reduced from 20/1 to 16/1. What all of that means is a return on the two horse races of 36.3 points (including the seven points staked.)

Cannot believe the tennis. The Shed pushes Serena all the way and then at 5-5 in the final set Shed sheds her PRESCRIPTION specs (as it's raining) and promptly loses the next two games and the match!

Should really stick to the horses. May play at Kempton and/or Hamilton later.

Yaroslava Shvedova

On Saturday Shvedova became the first woman in history to win a set (so called golden set) without losing a point and the first player male or female to do so at a grand slam. To say she is in form is an understatement. She, of course, knocked Li Na out of the French Open and very nearly beat Kvitova in the following round.

At 11:30 Monday she is scheduled to take on Serena on court two. I think Serena could be up against it, she has not looked very convincing in the first week. I have had:

3pts win Shvedova to beat S Williams (match) @ 4/1 Paddy Power
1pt win Shevedova to beat S Williams 2-0 (sets) @ 9/1 Coral

Four points invested.

Incidentally some years ago Shvedova led 5-0 40-0 in a match having won all 23 points. She went on to lose the match 1-6 6-0 6-0 so it's not over until the fat lady sings........
